Pennyworth and Dangerous Liaisons star Paloma Faith promises plenty of gossip, sex and snobbery in the upcoming Starz series.
Per Entertainment Weekly, Faith discussed her role in, and the overall tone of, Dangerous Liaisons. “We view historical moments as so distant from us in the modern age, but she appeals to the gossip mongers in all of us,” Faith said of her character Florence, a member of the French court embroiled in “a sexual power play” with Nicholas Denton’s Pascal Valmont.

Dangerous Liaisons is set to act as a prelude to the 1782 epistolary novel of the same name by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The story is told through letters primarily written between Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, two former lovers whose rivalry spurns hatred, eventually leading them to ruin the lives of others and one another. Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer all starred in director Stephen Frears’ feature film adaptation of the story, which received seven Academy Award nominations, winning three.
Faith further described her character as someone who “Thinks of herself as a cut above, wealthy, pretending that she’s well-to-do in society, but, really, she’s just a gossipy bitch.” She also touched on the upcoming series’ astonishing costume design, saying, “I’ve been longing to dress as a giant wedding cake, and for people to know the amount of effort it took to turn me into the biggest meringue that’s ever existed.”
Faith, who had previously made appearances on various television series and in the 2007 British film St Trinian’s, found a wider audience with her role as Sally in 2009’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Faith’s musical career was jump-started with the release of her debut single, “Stone Cold September,” that same year. The single reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart, and helped to establish her talent as a pop artist.
Faith currently plays the role of Bet Sykes on Epix’ Pennyworth, which explores the early life of the Wayne family’s future iconic butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Sykes, an original character from the TV series, is a sadistic enforcer for the Raven Society, an enigmatic organization with plans to take over the British government and establish its own stranglehold on world affairs. The series has suffered no small amount of online backlash after it was announced that it would be retitled as Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler for its third season.
Dangerous Liaisons is set to premiere on Starz on Nov. 9.
