COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Air Force freshman Joe Nizich captured a pair of Mountain West awards this afternoon (April 12), as he was named the MW Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and the MW Men’s Freshman of the Week. It is the second week that Nizch has been honored by the conference office, as he also earned the league’s freshman honor following his collegiate debut in March.
Nizich improved his conference-leading distance in the javelin at the Jim Click Shootout on April 9, when he launched a career-best 216’3″ throw to finish second in a field of Power 5 competition. That is the ninth-best throw in Academy history and a new Freshman Class Record, as he broke the previous nine-year-old mark by four inches. Adding nearly eight feet to his previous best, he now holds a 20-foot advantage over the rest of the conference and is ranked sixth among freshmen throwers in the NCAA (49th overall).
The Falcons head to California for three meets over the April 14-16 weekend, including the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Beach Invitational, and the Mt SAC Relays.
