Caleb Payne, a young actor from Stellenbosch, Western Cape has made history at the Young Artist Academy Awards or “Youth Oscars”, on Sunday 2 October. The 11-year-old is the first South African actor to win big at the awards in 43 years! Payne won a Youth Oscar Award for his role in Netflix’s Good Life.

CALEB PAYNE’S YOUTH OSCAR NOMINATION
The Stellenbosch-based actor played an Albanian refugee, Jetmir, in Good Life, a Netflix film directed by local filmmaker Bonnie Rodini. The film follows a woman who finds refuge in Cape Town and meets a little boy who shows her the way of life.
Speaking on his Youth Oscar nomination with TimesLive, Payne said he was excited to walk the same red carpet as stars like Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg.
“I’m going to take it in every single moment and I’m so, so excited,” he said.

11-YEAR-OLD ACTOR WINS BIG AT YOUTH OSCARS
Payne walked away with the Feature Film Leading Youth Artist Award for Good Life at the Youth Oscars on 2 October. The young talent’s win makes him the first South African actor to win an award in 43 years.
“Now that I have won the award, it was so unexpected. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out and I didn’t want to get my hopes up too high, but I won and I feel like it’s unreal,” said Payne in an interview with TimesLive.
“My favourite thing about the evening was watching all the speeches and the nominees and their reactions when they won. And then winning myself. Wow.”

In an interview with the Youth Oscars, Payne said he loved meeting people from different walks of life in the entertainment industry.
“There is no hierarchy on a film set. Seeing the end of labour-of-love on a big screen with popcorn, candy and Lemon Twist is pretty cool.”
