Tom Cruise has spoken out about the “daunting task” of making the Top Gun sequel ‘Maverick’ in a breakfast TV exclusive interview with Sunrise.
The new film sees the Hollywood megastar back in the cockpit as his iconic character Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, three decades after the original blockbuster became a global smash hit.

The long-awaited follow-up was initially announced by Cruise on the Channel Seven brekky show back in 2017 in a major global exclusive.
Speaking again to Sunrise, Tom said he’s “tremendously relieved” early reviews to the film have been overwhelmingly positive.
“It was something that Top Gun people have been asking for 36 years and I was like.. how are we going to do this?” he said.
“Doing the original, that was one thing, but how do we create something to give that audience that same kind of experience? It was something that I’ve lived with for many years.”
“I want to entertain the audience, I want to give them what they want, but I was not just going to do it just to do it.”
Cruise, who turns sixty in July, said he’s “so excited” for fans to finally see the film, which had its release put on ice for two years due to pandemic delays.
“It’s very emotional for me and for all of us,” he admitted.
“It’s something that’s my passion,” he said of making blockbusters.
“It always has been, I love telling stories, I love entertaining an audience, it’s something I was born to do.”
Top Gun: Maverick is coming to cinemas in Australia on 26 May 2022
